Naturopathic Medicine Residency

OSFM is committed to training  the next generation of Naturopathic Primary Care Physicians

One Sky Family Medicine PLLC is now accepting applications for the 2024-2026 Residency Cycle

One Sky Family Medicine, PLLC is an integrative, holistic, naturopathic primary care clinic in the Ravenna neighborhood of Seattle. We specialize in women’s health, pediatrics and newborn care. Drs McDaniel, Gray, and Short are also trained midwives, though retired from active midwifery practice.   OSFM is owned and run by Dr.s McDaniel and Gray. The OSFM team includes 5 staff physicians, 2 residents, a full time medical assistant and a full-time receptionist.

OSFM has been a CNME approved Residency site for Bastyr University since 2015. In 2018 we joined the Institute of Natural Medicine’s Residency Consortium and are excited to work together to broaden opportunities for advanced clinical training for ND graduates.

The first year Resident will be supervised by Dr. McDaniel, and the second year Resident works most closely with Dr. Gray. Some residency hours will involve general clinic support, and the resident will participate in all aspects of primary care naturopathy and will have the chance to participate in most aspects of managing a medical practice.

The Resident physician will be heavily involved in patient care. A full clinic day generally involves seeing 10-14 patients, about ½ children and ½ adults, providing naturopathic primary care.  This is likely to be around 30 hours of patient care per week to begin. Eventually the Resident can expect to be seeing patients 4- 4.5 days a week.

This is a fast moving, integrative primary care practice and requires that the Resident be nimble and able to balance traditional naturopathic case management with conventional diagnostics and treatment within the naturopathic family practice model.

The Resident in this position will be assuming responsibility for managing visits including preparing for the day, charting in AthenaHealth, conducting history and physical examinations initially, and eventually managing more of the the assessment and plan portion of the visit, conducting in house lab testing (wet prep/ microscopic tests, urine pregnancy testing, UA, rapid strep) ordering and following up on labs and referrals to specialists, administering vaccines and communicating with patients by phone and patient portal.

Patient records must be complete and signed within 24 hours of the patient visit and submitted for review, and the resident will use CPT and ICD-10 billing standards to complete the coding for each visit.

Procedures are likely to include blood draws, IV’s, IUD’s, intrauterine insemination, endometrial biopsy, suture removal, wound care, frenotomy, pelvic exams and pap smears.  We will arrange for the Resident to accompany patients for specialist consultations and/or imaging when the opportunity presents itself, as these are great learning moments.

The Resident will be on call 25-30% of the time initially, with supervising physician back up for handling after hours calls. Call time may decrease as the resident takes on more independent patient care responsibilities. Being on call means carrying a pager or cell phone that is answered right away and calling the patient within 20 minutes.

Case management: In addition to patient visits and on-call time, expect a significant amount of time will be spent on other aspects of patient care

  • Completing chart notes
  • Answering phone messages and conducting phone triage
  • Responding to patient portal messages
  • Obtaining and reviewing outside medical records
  • Consulting with specialists
  • Managing referrals

General clinical support and practice management skills: Early in the program, the Resident spends some time each week working in the clinic assisting the doctors in a general way, without their own patient schedule beyond short vaccine visits or weight checks. This time gives the resident a bird’s eye view of how the clinic runs and an opportunity to interact with other providers.   During this early phase of training, the Resident will assist in:

  • Collecting and processing lab samples
  • Procedures
  • Giving vaccines, monitoring temperature of refrigerator
  • Stocking rooms, turn over between patients, general end of day clean-up
  • Vaccines for children program administration
  • Entering transactions, reconciling, and running reports in QuickBooks, if interested
  • Reviewing practice management reports in Athena (practice management/ EMR system)
  • Manage specialty lab kits and accounts

Continuing education:  Throughout the program, the resident will participate in various CE activities.

  • Continuing education workshops and seminars
  • Grand rounds at local hospitals or Bastyr
  • Preceptorships/ observations in conventional/ integrative settings
  • Self-study

We've found that a good fit for the OSFM Residency Program will have had significant pre-graduate forcus in Naturopathic Primary Care, Pediatrics and Women's Health.  They have a strong committment to relationship-based care and love teaching one on one.  We have high standards of ethics and confidentiality and a deep respect for the principles and practice of naturopathic medicine.  Physicians who thrive at OSFM are curious, lean into learning, ask great questions and answer them as well.   Make no mistake, a successful Naturopathic Resident should expect to work long hours and dig deeply into complex topics daily during their 2 year residency, but we see that they come out at the end of this 2 year program well-resourced and ready to engage in a thriving clinical practice.

Applicants should apply through the AANMC Residency Web portal.  If you have questions before applying, feel free to email Dr. McDaniel at hello@oneskyfamilymedicine.sprucecare.com
